If you’re reading this, there is a good chance that in the past you have been asked about your advanced healthcare directives. It may have been at your doctor’s office, prior to a major medical procedure, or even when handling your loved ones affairs. Whether or not you currently have advanced healthcare directives, here are three things to keep in mind:

1. You are never too young!

The moment you become a legal adult, you are in charge of making your own healthcare decisions. Completing an advanced healthcare directive ensures that your wishes are carried out in the event that you are unable to make them.

2. You should review your directives at least once per year.

Circumstances in your life may change faster than you realize. For example, have you gotten married or divorced? Have you changed your mind on who you wish to act as your healthcare agent? Have you decided that certain procedures or life-sustaining treatments are no longer for you? Take the time to sit down and review your advanced healthcare directives once a year, or more frequently in the event of major life events.

3. Understand their limitations.

Advanced healthcare directives strictly cover healthcare. It doesn’t determine who will manage your finances in the event that you cannot, not does it determine how your estate will be handled after you pass.
