Scammers in the UK have formulated yet another clever scam that is surely to make its way to the US in the next coming weeks. Here is what to look out for:
The Scam
Motorists in the UK are receiving emails from scammers posing as the DVLA (equivalent to the DMV) threatening final warnings for out-of-date vehicle taxes. The emails are extremely convincing and will look something like this:
Red Flags
The scam is a classic phishing scheme, in which the main objective is to obtain sensitive information like your credit card number. While these emails may seem real, there are clear indicators as to their validity.
Take notice of the sender’s email address, not just the name that they identify as. If an email sender says they are the DMV, double check that they have an official government email address.
Threatening language is also a clear indicator of a scam. Scammers will try to scare you into acting quickly so that you aren’t thinking clearly about your actions.
As a rule of thumb, make sure to check the branding and contact details on the bottom of every email. Your intuition will tell you if they look legitimate and like other professional emails you have seen before.
Staying Secure
The DMV will not send you emails that require you to confirm any personal or payment information. Always make these updates in person or directly through the DMV’s website. If you get an email requesting this information, never click on any links.
