Many times siblings find it hard to agree within themselves when making decisions for mom or dad’s long-term care or when they are near the end of their life. This can be an emotional roller-coaster and ensuring the best care is provided and that everyone is in agreement is crucial. Determining if a mediator is right for you family and having an objective professional in the mix can actually help reduce these heart-aches and be there to ask the right questions and find common ground. No one wishes for disagreements to break a family up or let alone take this matter to court.

Questions to ask before hiring an eldercare mediator

  1. Is there for sure no way we can agree on a care plan for mom or dad?
  2. Ask about the process and what to expect.
  3. Ask about their background (professional credentials, how long have they been in the field, etc).
  4. Have you been trained in conflict resolution?
  5. Will our conversation be kept confidential?
  6. Ask about their rates, and how or who is expected to pay.

There is no guarantee, of  course, that mediation will resolve any or all disagreements, but avoiding litigation between siblings is worth a shot. Should you need assistance in deciding which direction to take, please contact one of our Certified Elder Law Attorneys today.
